Exams are extremely vital to the maintenance of our sexual health, and should be performed every 2 to 3 years (more if you have engaged in any sort of high-risk behaviour). Pap Smear tests not only screen for cervical cancer, but also test for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Pelvic inflammatory disease, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, Warts, and Herpes. The only STI they do not screen is HIV / AIDS, for which you must request a separate blood test. To ease the discomfort of the whole ordeal, choose a doctor beforehand who makes you feel at ease. Although a little bit of awkwardness and vulnerability is inevitable, it is all well worth it in the long run. No need to be a total hypochondriac, running into the doctor's office every other day, but do keep in mind - ignorance is not bliss!
